Commencing from the scenic hill station of Manali, the trek follows the route through Batal via Rohtang Pass, halting mid-way at the beautiful Chandratal Lake, perched at a height of 13,000 ft. above sea level. After spending the night in camps at the lakeside, start your journey ahead via Topko Gongma, Topko Yongma, finally leading you to the Baralacha La, situated at an elevation of 16,000 ft. Best Time to Visit Chandratal Baralacha Trek

The Chandratal Baralacha route is accessible between June-July to mid-October but, the best month to visit it, is during the month of September. In June, the roads may be in pathetic conditions and owing to presence of slippery snowy patches, you can face tough time climbing the ascent. July-August is the time of heavy monsoon showers in the region with huge possibilities of land-slides, avalanches and cloud-bursts so, better embark on to the journey in September. The route can close any time in October. Also, it is not recommended to venture on this trek in October as the temperature drops below zero, making the trek all the more difficult.

Where is the Chandratal Baralacha Trek

The Chandratal Lake is a crescent shaped alpine lake, tucked away in the Spiti Valley, surrounded with majestic snow-clad peaks of the Chandrabhaga Range of the Garhwal Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh. From Chandratal, at a distance of approximately 37 km. lies the Baralacha Pass located in the Lahaul district of Himachal Pradesh that connects Zanskar and Ladakh regions of Jammu & Kashmir.

How to Reach Chandratal Baralacha Trek?

The Chandratal Baralacha trek starts from the quaint hill town of Manali that can be reached through following options.
By Air: The nearest airport to Manali is the Bhuntar Airport located at Kullu. Flights from Delhi and Chandigarh regularly ply to Kullu, from where taxis and buses can be booked to reach Manali. Taxi can be further hired up till Batal from where the actual trek begins.
By Rail: Nearest and most recommended railway station to Manali is at Chandigarh. Chartered taxis and buses can be hired to Manali from Chandigarh and then, a taxi up to Batal.
By Road: Many regular overnight Volvo and state run buses ply directly from New Delhi, Chandigarh and Dehradun to Manali. From Manali, private or shared taxis can be hired to reach Batal.

Chandratal Baralacha Trek (Detailed Itinerary)

Day 01: Delhi – Manali (525 Kilometres /12 to 14 hours.)
In the evening catch Ac Volvo bus for Manali at 17:00 hrs. An overnight journey.
Day 02: Manali
By Morning arrive at Manali and then transfer to the hotel for relaxing & acclimatisation. At leisure visit the old Manali, the famous Hadimba Devi Temple and the Mall road. Enjoy dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.
Day 03: Manali – Batal (100 Kilometres / 4hours)
In the morning after the breakfast drive to the Batal through Rohtang pass (3980 meters). On arrival at Batal set out the tent. Rest and relax through the night. In the afternoon, take a walk enjoy the nature's marvels. Come back to the camp site in the evening. Dinner & Overnight stay in the tents.
Day 04: Batal - Chandratal (18 Kilometres/6 hours)
After an early feast, begin the trek to the Chandratal (4250 meters/13940 feet) with a sumptuous meal packed for the lunch. Chandratal enjoys incredible beauty. Nestled amidst the main Kunzum range and a lower ridge, the passage leads through the Chandra River. Come back to camp, take dinner & stay overnight.
Day 05: Chandra Tal (4250 meters/13940 feet)
After breakfast explore the spectacular surroundings. One can go for a trail or relax nearby the lake. Feast and night stay in the tents.
Day 06: Chandra Tal to Tokpo Yogma (4350 meters/14300 feet) 12 Kilometres/ 6 hours.
Right after the breakfast we will hike to the Tokpo Yogma. Enjoy a panoramic view of the stunningly gigantic glaciers and mountain peaks during the trek. After trekking for a while, one arrives at the Tokpo Gongma located at an altitude of 4400 meters. Stop for the ready to eat lunch for a while moving on to Tokpo Yogma. In Tibetan "Tokpo" refers to a river and the meaning of the word "Gongma" is big. Dinner & night stay in the tents.
Day 07: Tokpo Yogma to Tokpo Gongma (4650 meters/15250 feet) 10 Kilometres/5 hours.
Today, trek starts towards Tokpo Gongma with packed lunch through Tokpo Yogma River. On this trek we will cross the river streams using ropes. On arrival camps are set out for dinner & overnight stay.
Day 08: Tokpo Gongma to Baralacha (4950 meters/16236 feet) 10 Kilometres/5 hours - Manali (Travel By Jeep)
Today, after a hearty morning feast at the Camp, the day begins by crossing the Upper River by crossing the Tokpo Gongma. The hike of about 10 KM will takes us to Baralacha La. This is a twofold pass located at an altitude of 4950 Meters. It marks the separation between the Lahaul Ranges and the Himalayan Range and also between the Baralacha and the Himalayas stretching towards the North. After enjoying lunch, one moves towards Baralacha located at an altitude of 4883 Meters. This is a stunningly beautiful 8 kilometres long pass and gives ascend to 3 rivers namely Bhaga, Chandra, and Yunam. The meaning of the world Baralacha is 'pass with cross roads on summit'. Roads from Ladakh, Zanskar, Lahaul, and Spiti meet on the zenith of the Baralacha pass. On the arrival at the 'Baralacha Pass', the tour manager will meet you with the Jeeps. After reaching Manali, you can rest at the hotel after a nice dinner.
Day 09: Manali to Delhi (525 Kilometres/12 to 13 hours.)
The day to unwind. In the evening, drive back to Delhi by the AC Volvo coach. An Overnight journey.
Day 10: Arrive Delhi
Arrival at Delhi by morning in between 07:00 – 08:00 hrs.
